Ajay Bakshi (Shah Rukh Khan), a sharp and shrewd TV reporter, works for Kaka
Chowdhary (Satish Shah) owner of K-TV. Ajay is a star in his own right crosses all
limits to prove that he is the best.
Ria Bannerjee (Juhi Chawla) is a beautiful and intelligent TV journalist employed
by Mr.Chinoy (Dilip Tahil), the CEO of Channel Galaxee to counter the success of
Ajay Bakshi and K-TV. She too goes all out to prove that she is the best.
This is the beginning of a professional rivalry and of a love-hate relationship
between the two. Each tries to outsmart the other's efforts to promote their channel
using an array of journalistic weaponry ranging from pampering and pandering to
deception and deceit. Both of them are catapulted into the spotlight when Chief
Minister Mushran (Govind Namdev) and the opposition party leader Ramakant Dua (Shakti
Kapoor) engage in a vicious political battle for power, each attempting to use them
to get media mileage. The atmosphere is tense with the impending elections.
In the midst of all this a common man, Mohan Joshi (Paresh Rawal), gets entangled
in the web of power and corruption. Both the parties attempt to use him to further
their own ends and he ends up being labelled a terrorist. He manages to escape from
the police by hiding in the trunk of Ajay and Ria's car and later tells them his
story. When Ajay and Ria learn the truth, they come together to help this common
man and solicit the help of a softhearted underworld Don, Pappu Junior (Johnny Lever).
They convince the television station bosses to unite to air Mohan Joshi's videotaped
confession and expose the nexus of the politicians and police. In their greed for
advertising revenue, the greedy bosses agree, but Ajay and Ria's plans are thwarted
when Mohan Joshi is kidnapped by Pappu Junior. Disguised as Chinese journalists,
Ajay and Ria manage to free Mohan Joshi and hide him at a secluded place. Chinoy
and Kaka pick him up, promising to air the truth but the very next moment they meet
with Dua and realize they could make more money by commercializing the hanging of
the 'anti-national' Mohan Joshi.
Ajay and Ria find out on the television news that Mohan Joshi is to be hanged
and Ajay confronts Kaka. The indulgent Kake now dismisses Ajay and he realizes that
the channel bosses are also in league with the politicians. They manage to steal
away the tape from Kaka's house, but without a channel to air it on anymore. Minutes
before the actual hanging, they sneak into the control room of K-TV and replace
the original program with the videotaped confession of Mohan Joshi. A tearful Ajay
Bakshi exhorts the citizens of the city to join him in his march to the jail. As
he draws closer to the venue, he sees an entire army of citizens behind him and
they peacefully manage to save Mohan Joshi from the gallows.
