Synopsis:
Kishorilal (Amrish Puri), who emigrated from India to the US 35 years ago, is
a billionaire today. But he still retains his Indian values and roots. So he comes
to India looking for a bride for his only son Rajiv (Apurva Agnihotri) and finds
his childhood friend's daughter, Kusum Ganga (Mahima Chaudhry).
When he returns to the US, he sends Rajiv along with his adopted son Arjun (Shah
Rukh Khan) to India to approve the girl. Both come to India, approve the girl and
Arjun gets Rajiv engaged to Ganga.
Ganga comes to America with dreams in her eyes but her dreams are soon shattered
as she finds herself unable to adapt to the American style of living and to her
Americanized to-be-husband's casual flirtations. As the tensions increase, she draws
closer to the 'matchmaker', Arjun (Shah Rukh), who seems to be the only one who
loves her unconditionally and understands her plight. Her growing friendship with
Arjun irks the other members of Rajiv's family and they begin to sow the seeds of
suspicion in Kishorilal's mind.
Kishorilal gives Arjun a promotion and his expensive sports car and sends him
away from the city on the pretext of a meeting. In the meanwhile, Ganga and Rajiv
go for a pre-marital honeymoon to Las Vegas. There, drunk and abusive, Rajiv tries
to rape her when she does not entertain his advances.
The soft corner that she always had for Arjun now develops into love as she sees
the difference between her suitor and him. After the incident in Las Vegas, Ganga
flees from Rajiv and Arjun ends up helping her. Both parents are against the match,
but in an emotionally-charged finale shot at the Fatehpur Sikri the truth is exposed
and the parents finally relent.
