Synopsis:

Set around the premise that someone, somewhere is made for you, Dil To Pagal Hai is the story of three dancers. Dance Choreographer Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) does not believe in love. He fails to understand how two people can spend their entire lives together. Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) believes that there is someone who is made for her and that she is destined to meet that person. Nisha (Karisma Kapoor), a dancer in Rahul's troupe, believes that love is friendship and one day her dream will come true.

Nisha and Rahul are friends, though Nisha feels more than friendship for him. Right. Rahul is unaware of Nisha's feelings for him. He is in replace of his 'Maya' - the perfect woman of his dreams who is to be the theme of his next grand musical.

Karisma injures her foot during one of the rehearsals and is put into hospital, ruling her out from the show. In desperation, Rahul turns to the beautiful unknown girl whom he had seen at his studio one day, getting carried away by the music and inspired to dance. He follows her to the market and pleads with her to take on the title role in his play. She hesitantly accepts and comes to his studio the following day. When she begins to dance, Rahul fires her for being self-conscious and Pooja, in tears, almost leaves. Realising his folly, Rahul apologises and pacifies her and then, as she begins to practice, she renders everyone speechless. Rahul knows that she is his Maya.

As the rehearsals progress, Rahul and Pooja are drawn towards each other, though neither confesses love for the other. Meanwhile, Ajay (Akshay Kumar) who is working abroad, returns for a short holiday with the intention of proposing marriage to Pooja. Before leaving, Ajay pops the question to her at the airport. Pooja is taken aback, and in her shock and confusion, Ajay assumes her answer to be in the affirmative. Burdened by the obligation of Ajay's parents who have cared for her since her childhood, Pooja feels she cannot decline and though she does not love Ajay more than as a friend, she tries to convince herself that this may be the man for her.

Nisha is jealous that she has been replaced by Pooja and when she returns from hospital, tries to outdo Pooja in a competitive 'dance of envy'. At the wedding of Jimmy, a part of the troupe, Nisha realizes that Rahul loves Pooja. She is heartbroken.

The following morning, Pooja and Rahul go to Lonavla for the birthday of Pooja's dance teacher whom she fondly calls Tai. It is the wise Tai who immediately notices that the two are in love with each other and gives courage to them to fight against the odds. She gives Rahul a small statuette of Lord Ganesha, saying that it will protect them when the going gets tough.

As the marriage plans are confirmed, Pooja comes to the rehearsals to inform Rahul but he is too busy with the upcoming show. Until Ajay drops in to the rehearsal studio and introduces himself as Pooja's fiancé. Rahul is stunned.

The climax takes place on stage during the musical show they had worked so hard for. In between the scripted dialogues of lovers parting, Rahul suddenly starts speaking from his heart, from his own sense of hurt and betrayal. All seems to be lost when Pooja admits that she never loved him, until Ajay plays an audiocassette on the speakers in which Pooja describes Rahul and how much she loves him. Ajay gestures from the wings that Pooja and Rahul are made for each other, and as the couple embrace, Ajay sees Nisha standing near him and enquires whether she is married…
