Synopsis:

The story of Koyla is set against a background of the coalmines. The evil landlord Raja (Amrish Puri), along with his eccentric brother Brijwa (Salim Ghouse), secretly terrorizes, kills and rapes the very people who worship him like a God. His mute servant Shankar (Shah Rukh), unaware of his evil side, serves him loyally.

One day, Raja's eyes fall upon Gauri (Madhuri) a childlike village belle and , driven by lust to possess her, he conspires to marry her by sending a photograph of Shankar along with a marriage proposal. Gauri falls in love with Shankar and looks forward to being his bride.

Shankar is unaware of this and on the marriage day Gauri spots Shankar's face in the crowd. She snatches the sehra off her husband-to-be and to her horror finds the old wrinkled face of Raja. She faints and Raja holds her and forces her to complete the ceremony.

After marriage, Gauri is caged within her room and kept under guard at all times, as she does not submit to Raja's advances. One day, she tries to hang herself when Shankar breaks into her room and saves her. On seeing him, Gauri breaks down and accuses him of destroying her life. But after learning the truth, she comes to his hut that night. Words are not spoken, but their hearts understand and she lights a flame in front of the Gods to symbolize their union.

When Gauri's Dubai-based brother learns of her marriage, he comes to see her. Gauri, despite the torture, puts up a smiling face. But Shankar, unable to control his anger at the circumstances, stops her brother when he is leaving and conveys his sister's plight to him. The brother is appalled and returns to rescue his sister, but his attempts are foiled and he is killed. While dying he turns to Shankar and pleads with him to take his sister away. The mute slave rebels against his master and grabs the hand of his lover and runs away.

Helicopters, army jeeps, armed gunmen hunt Shankar and Gauri out of the jungles. Finally through a trick they fall prey to Raja and the innocent Gauri is shot and Shankar is brutally beaten and thrown off the cliff.
